Lake Titicaca

Copacabana is normally reached by crossing Lake Titicaca at the Straits of Tiquine on the bus from La Paz. This is the San Pedro side with San Pablo on the opposite bank. Buses cross the straits empty on an inflatable raft a little to the left of this picture. It all looks very dodgy for the buses but they do seem to make it OK.

This picture was taken in front of the cathedral where there was a wedding under way. The small buses in front of the cathedral are there to be blessed, they are not part of the wedding parade.

Below is a typical Lake Titicaca reed boat heading out onto the lake from Copacabana.

Copacabana seen from the top of Cerro Calvario where the Stations of the Cross can be seen when walking up the hill, a 20 - 30 minute hike.

The photograph below is of the Inca ruins on the Isla de Sol, some two hours cruise by boat across Lake Titicaca. There is then a brisk 45 minute walk to this site though you do have to be quite fit to make it in time.

Bay on the Isla de Sol

This bay is on the Isla de Sol, a couple of hours by boat from Copacabana. Boat trips can be arranged very easily on the beach at Copacabana but the boat owner will only arrange to hire out his boat on a per-boat basis. It is up to you to find enough people to fill the boat. The charge usually includes food, in our case it was cooked on board by the boat-owner's wife, though drinks are sold as well to those who want them.
