The start of the four day Salar de Uyuni tour |
|
|
This part of the web site covers a period of four days during which we (Richard and Diane) joined forces with Chris and Clare from Southern England and Arnaud from France to take a tour of the Salar de Uyuni and various lakes in the south west part of Bolivia. The tour was made in an 8 seater all-terrain vehicle with a driver, Willy, hired from a tour company in Uyuni. The top photograph on the right shows Willy on top of the vehicle with Chris, Clare, Diane and Arnaud loading the vehicle with the food purchased in the market. In the background can be seen Uyuni's other tourist attraction - a railway graveyard which, unfortunately, we had no time to visit during our stay in Uyuni. The first stop was after a few kilometres, actually on the Salar de Uyuni, where we inspected the conical piles of salt laboriously scraped from the surface by people from local villages. These piles were numbered, as can just be seen on the left side of the pile in the second picture on the right, presumably to identify the owner of the salt. The final picture shows Richard and Diane at one of the salt piles to give an indication of size.
