IntroductionEaster Island, known to it's population as Rapa Nui, and Te Pito te Henua (the navel of the world), is situated in the South Pacific just south of the Tropic of Capricorn, and about half way between Tahiti, in French Polynesia, and the coastline of Chile. Rapa Nui is Chilean territory. Rapa Nui is the most remote inhabited island in the world. It has a population around 2,800 (in 1995) and has been described as one of the most magical places on this planet. This web-site was originally created after a second visit to the island for three weeks around Easter 1997 and contains information about the island at that time. Note that prices and exchange rates may well have changed since then and so any prices given should be used as an indication only. Many of the pictures in this web site were taken during periods of heavy rainfall as can be seen by the dark ominous looking clouds. In many cases, these clouds have added to the atmosphere of the island. |
